It is made up of 183 members whose main duties are to pass laws and to exercise political and financial control over the Federal government. The Swiss Nationalrat is one of the two chambers of the Bundesversammlung. It consists of 200 members who are elected for four years by voters in the cantons and demi-cantons. Each canton has the right to at least one seat the remaining seats are allocated in proportion to each canton's population.
